Being Alone

Lee and I have been married for three and a half years.

We've had it so good the last few years. We've both worked or had school mostly during banking hours and we've been able to spend our evenings and weekends together.

It's been wonderful. We've had so much fun doing random, crazy, lovely, silly things--we have been lucky.

But things have changed.

Bleh!

This summer, Lee has had evening classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the culinary school, and he has worked at Plates and Palates on Friday and Saturday nights.

He loves it and I am so excited for him, but I finally know what it's like to be a work/school widow.

I miss Lee.

Then I discovered this lovely poem.

It got me thinking that being alone is good at times, that I have a lot of things on my to-do list and life list that I can actually get done, and that I have been craving some quiet time to think and write and plan and daydream.

It's been good the last couple weeks with this new perspective.

What do you do when you're hanging out by yourself? Are you productive? Contemplative? Relaxing?

    1. It is a pretty funny picture, isn't it? This was one of the pictures we sent out with our wedding invitations--only our "non-respectable" friends and family got them.

  2. Winter, I am with you! Matthew is now working at night either at the homeless shelter or crisis clinic. It can be hard at times, but being alone is good or the soul.

  3. I hear ya between work, church and life, Steven is a busy man. With the kids in bed and the house finally quiet, I find a couple hours of aloneness is nice. It's weird to get used to being alone again, but I found it quite nice once I did. I get to indulge for a little bit with a good book, a bath, or journaling. Or I get to cross a thing or two off that pesky to do list. Or have a good long chat with girlfriend. There are times and seasons for everything, right? So bring of the quiet time, I sure could use it! Plus it makes the time together a little more meaningful. :)

    1. It's funny how just a few years ago when I was single, I was pretty content being alone, and how quickly I've gotten used to having him around. I do agree with you...that time together is so much more meaningful, isn't it?

  4. Good for you. Being content being alone is a sign of good mental health.

I love to be alone. I do any and all of the things you mentioned and more. The best part is that I do whatever I want. That rocks!

    Happy Sharefest!

  5. I have two toddlers, so my alone time is non-existent. In fact, I was a bit jealous reading your post. I would love some me-myself-time so I can just gather my thoughts. I think being alone is so important to defining who we are, rather and who we are inside our relationships. Glad you're learning to love your time.

    Stopping by from SITS!
