Lee's Craft Project: An Update

Lee went to his Auto Body Class last week. As you may remember, this is what things looked like from last week.

Lee's corvette ready to be painted!

He had picked up these from our good friend, Hogan, who owns a great auto body shop, Everest Collision. Hogan is a real gem and always hooks us up!

Oooo!  The paint!

Lee went early to prep the corvette prior to painting. There was a lot of tape involved.

After a couple hours of work, taping things off on the corvette.

It took him a couple hours to cover things up.

Got everything covered

Now into the paint booth...

I love this pic that Lee too--very symmetrical

And voila!  The corvette in all its glory!

Oh, that's hot!

Yes, he painted it a flat black.  It's black, but it's not too shiny.  And it is SO good lookin'!

Nice assets!

Lee dropped by Grandpa Wyoming's home, and they went for a little ride together in the corvette. Besides being Hector the Collector, Grandpa Wyoming is super handy--he's been doing all his own car stuff (under the hood and body work) for years now.  In fact, he is currently re-building a Model T.

Lee said that Grandpa Wyoming had a perma-grin on his face--I think he was pleased that Lee decided to take on this project, because that's how Grandpa Wyoming does it!

Lee's project--not quite finished

Lee did such a great job!  He has a little bit of sanding to do where he dribbled some paint.  The nice thing about the flat black is that you can sand it down without having to repaint it.

BUT, he's not done folks!  A lot of you guessed some fun colors on the last post--can you guess the accent color he's going to do on this lovely flat black?

Stuff Guys Apparently Know and a Reader Contest

Lee and I had a little dispute a few days ago.  I need your help, our lovely blog readers!

We were sitting at our favorite pizza joint, The Sicilia Pizza and Kitchen, and Lee was flipping through some channels on one of the TVs since we didn't really want to watch CNN.  He stopped on Top Gear.

Top Gear, for those of you who may not be familiar, is a show on cable. There are three British guys plus a mysterious professional driver called Stig that test drive all sorts of cars, from the regular commuter cars that we normal folk drive to all the supercars that only people with a lot of money get to drive.

I have never heard of or seen Top Gear before in my life.

But I must say that I really enjoyed watching them race a bobsled against a rally car (fun!) while we happily ate our tasty New York White Garlic pizza.  Watch it--it's crazy!

As we were leaving, I commented that was a cool and fun show and asked Lee how he even knew about Top Gear since we don't get the BBC Channel in our basic cable package.

He answered, "Who doesn't know about Top Gear?!?"
I replied, "I've never heard of Top Gear before."
He then responded, "Well, ask any man and he's heard about Top Gear."
I asked, "I don't think EVERY guy is going to know what Top Gear is."
He then challenged, "Yeah they will--call up any guy in your phone and ask them if they know what Top Gear is. I betcha they'll know."
So, I got out my phone and proceeded to call three random guys up (a couple who I haven't talked to for a while).

And all three of them knew what Top Gear was.

[Lee gets an early lead and is up by 3.]

Oh rubbish!

Lee went further and texted a bunch of guys (I think, 16 total) the following message:
"Winter and I have a bet. Do you know what Top Gear is? Please help us."
And here are some of the responses he received back:

B.S. said: "Only one of the best british shows around. British guys, cool cars, good times."
J.C. said: "I know what Top Gear is, it is a british show and now an american show too where they drive cool cars around and do other car related activities."
J.L. said: "Yes I do. James, Jeremy, and Hammond for life!"
R.W. said: "Yes, I know what Top Gear is. Tell Winter she will certainly lose."

A total of 13 guys responded back and every single one of them knew what Top Gear was.  Really?!?

[Lee pulls waaay ahead of Winter before the half with a score of 16-0.]

Okay, now here's where I need your help.  I'm trying to see if I can rally from behind and catch up on the number of guys who DON'T know about Top Gear.  I really think that polling Lee's 16 friends biased my sample group. For all I know, they're all car dudes!

Top Gear Contest Drawing:

Soooo....all you lovely female blog readers, please ask your husbands or boyfriends or dads or brothers or any other man in your life if they know what Top Gear is.

1) For one entry, simply comment on the blog a) if they've ever heard of Top Gear and b) whether you've heard of Top Gear before (I want to see if I'm the only one not paying attention).

And all our guy blog readers, we'd love to hear from you too. Comment on the blog and let us know if you've ever heard of Top Gear before this post or googling it.  Now be honest!

2) For one additional entry, follow ReddParty on GoogleFriend Connect (see in our side panel to the right).  In a separate commenton the blog, tell us that you did!  If you were already following us, cool and thanks!  In a separate comment, please let us know that you already are.

From all those comments, we'll choose at random someone to win a very random British prize package:
  • Top Gear: Where's Stig? The World Tour book (it's like Where's Waldo? but with Stig), and

...and...
  • The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (Hello, Mr. Darcy!)

Comments must be posted by 11:59 pm on Friday, February 3, 2012 to be entered into the contest and is open to peeps in the USA.  Lastly, make sure I can figure out who you are if you are really interested in winning (ie don't post as "Anonymous" unless you don't care to win).

We'll then have a tally and Lee and I can settle our argument.  (I still think there are plenty of dudes that don't know about Top Gear, hence this blog post.)

(This contest is sponsored by us, Winter and Lee, in order to settle a dispute and because we like you. The Top Gear folks have no idea who we are--we're just into Top Gear.  Over and out!)

Pastry Wednesday: Tullie's Morning Bun

I think I found a close runner up to Les Madelines' Kouing Aman.

My morning bun

Adnohr brought Morning Buns from Tullie Bakery for this particular Pastry Wednesday. These Morning Buns are like cousins to LM's kouing aman, actually.

Can't wait to taste it!

Hello, friend.

You look delicious with all that crusty, crunchy, caramelized, gooey-ness.

Then you start peeling away layers--the bread is like a cross between the denser bread of a cinnamon bun and the flaky layers of a croissant.  I don't know how they do it, but it's awesome.

Flaky goodness, right here!

Just look at the bottom of this bun--they must stuff them into a muffin pan and the tops just overflow.

The "stump" of the morning bun--yum!

Does anyone have a great recipe for a morning bun? I gotta try making these at home!  Until then, it's off to Tullie!

Happy Chinese New Year to you all!

Happy Chinese New Year today!

Happy Chinese New Year from the Redds!

We rang in the lunar new year last night with lots of good friends.

And lots of food.

We did Chinese Hot Pot...SOOO good!

Yes, these are cupcakes...that look like Asians.  Awesome!

And fireworks!

Sparklers!

Crazy sparklers!

Go Asians!

We were all trying to stay away from the other fireworks being lit off a few feet away.

May your Year of the Dragon be awesome!

Lee's Current Craft Project

Lee likes to do crafts on occasion.  This is his current project:

Lee's nameless '79 corvette, primed for painting

No, it's not the Subi in the background, but the '79 Corvette.

Yeah.  Crazy, huh?

You may be asking yourself incredulously, "How in the world did Lee get his hands on this sweet craft project??"

Well, you remember Grandma Italy from this time and this other time.  She's married to Grandpa Wyoming. As Lee puts it, Grandpa Wyoming is "Hector the Collector", if you're familiar with the poem of Shel Silverstein from his book Where the Sidewalk Ends.  He has stuff.  And this was something he had in his stuff.

And he generously gifted it to us when we showed some interest in fixing the car up. Talk about being at the right place at the right time!

Such a good lookin' muscle car!

Lee is currently taking an Auto Body class through Salt Lake Community Education, so he's painting the car himself. It's really quite a good deal! And he's learning a new random skill.

He just finished the last bit of priming and sanding and is ready to paint next week.

Any guesses on what color he's going to paint it?

Pastry Wednesday: Vosen's Bread Paradise

This particular week, it was my turn to bring something for Pastry Wednesday. I wanted to go somewhere different (other than Gourmandise or Tullie!), so Lee suggested Vosen's.

Vosen's Bread Paradise is a German bakery in downtown Salt Lake City.

Picture from CityWeekly here.

Enough said.

If you've ever been to Germany, you know that they sure know how to make pastries there.

Lee brought us a nice assortment of pastries.

The box of goods. YUM-O!

Yes, they look just like lowly doughnuts, but they didn't add "Bread Paradise" for nothing!

We tried 5 different pastries.

My plate with my portion of the goods

First, we tried the berliners.  If you recall the urban legend when JFK was giving a speech in Berlin and said "Eich bein ein Berliner" ("I am a Berliner."), he wasn't calling himself a lovely jelly-filled pastry from Germany, like these raspberry- and orange-filled ones pictured below.

Best Berliner ever!

I have never had a more excellent jelly-filled doughnut before in my life. The bread is a little sweet with the perfect density!  And the jelly--not too sugary or gelatinated like the grocery store varieties.

Then, I tried these two pastries.  I am not sure their names, but they were glazed croissants with filling. One had a custard filling, and the other, chocolate.

After these pastries, I wish I lived either in Germany or closer to Vosen's.  That's all I have to say about that. By the way, does anyone know what these are called for future reference?

The last thing I tried, and probably was my favorite was this custard-filled roll.

Best custard roll thingee ever!

They use the same custard--super creamy, lightly sweetened, vanilla-flavored--rolled into each layer, then covered with a glaze. Maybe it's just me, but I like to unroll sweet rolls and eat them a little at a time. And the nice thing about this roll was that I always had some custard in my bite--that's probably why I liked it so much!

We all agreed that it's time for you to try Vosen's.

Sugaraholic discussing the merits of these lovely pastries!

Dear friends, if you have been to Vosen's, what other things should I try next time?
